Kougars Start Weekend Slow, but Finish with Upset

The Kishwaukee College volleyball team travelled to Lincoln Land College in Springfield, Illinois to take on four teams in a round-robin format. Three of the four teams were ranked in the Top 15 in the country and Kishwaukee came away 1-3 on the weekend.

The Kougars began the weekend with a 3-0 loss to #4 Lincoln Land College by the scores of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-21. Emily Young led Kishwaukee with 11 kills followed by Abby Baker with 6. Cydney Long had 22 assists and Samantha Soddy had 8 digs.

The second game of the day was a 3-1 loss to #6 Harper College by the scores of 25-19, 25-17, 16-25 and 25-12. The Kougars were led by Abby Baker with 16 kills and Emily Young with 12 kills and 16 digs. Setter, Cydney Long, led the team with 32 assists and helped the defense with 12 digs.

Game #3 of the weekend showed improved play by the Kougars, but ended in a close, 3-0 loss to John A. Logan College by the scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-22. Abby Baker had 9 kills, followed by Simone Miller with 8.

The last match of the weekend was definitely a highlight for the Kougars with a 3-2 victory over #11 Sauk Valley College. The Kougars dropped the first game, 25-20, but came back to win the next two games, 25-23 and 25-21. Up two games to one, Kishwaukee dropped the fourth game 25-18 and knotted the match at 2 games each. The deciding game was a 19-17 victory for the Kougars. It was their second win over a ranked team this season and their first win this season, against the defending Arrowhead Conference Champion Sauk Valley College, in three tries.

Emily Young led the Kougars with a season high 26 kills, while hitting .385. Abby Baker had 14 kills and a team high 4 service aces, while Simone Miller also reached double figures in kills with 10.  Cydney Long paced the Kougars with a season high 57 assists.
