CHAMPS! Sandburg Women Clinch Arrowhead Title in Blowout Win at Kishwaukee

MALTA — The Carl Sandburg College women's basketball team wasted little time in taking care of business.

Needing a win to clinch the Arrowhead Conference championship, the Chargers routed host Kishwaukee 90-46 on Tuesday, giving Sandburg its first conference title in seven years.

Having sewn up at least a share of the championship, the Chargers (19-8, 6-1) can win it outright with a victory Thursday at home against Sauk Valley. Sandburg can also win the outright title with a loss by Black Hawk in either of the Braves' final two conference games (Thursday at Highland or Tuesday at Sauk Valley).

With Tuesday's win over the Kougars, Sandburg clinched its first conference championship since 2017 and its 14th overall (1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1997, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2016, 2017). It's the Chargers' first Arrowhead crown under second-year coach Kellen Fernetti.

Sandburg raced to an 18-6 lead after the opening quarter, led Kishwaukee 45-22 at halftime and had four players finish the game in double figures. Freshman Brook Pieper totaled 13 points and 16 rebounds as she posted her 12th double-double of the season and helped the Chargers to a whopping 79-44 edge on the glass.

Sophomore Elly Bentley and freshman Camille Kruse shared game-high honors with 17 points and each going 7 of 16 from the field. Kruse knocked down three 3-pointers, while Bentley added nine rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard Kelci Shelton tallied 16 points, eight rebounds and six steals in the win.

Sophomore guard Savannah Dominque pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds and scored eight points, finishing a bucket away from her second double-double.

Kira Klapprodt and Emily Gilbert each had 17 points in the loss for Kishwaukee.
